Everything was still dark, but Paige could feel herself floating back towards the surface. Am I dead? She didnât want to open her eyes, but she knew she had to in order to find out if she had succeeded in freeing the souls. Scrunching up her face, Paige opened her eyes. The sliver of the moon looked to be almost smiling at her. She felt warm, confident, and worry-free.
Before heading back to shore, she wanted to see if the ouija board was gone. She dove back down, and to her great relief, the board and the planchette were no longer in sight. The memory of the brilliantly glowing souls flying to their freedom secured Paigeâs inkling that she had indeed saved them and defeated Cordelia.
Pulling herself up onto the dock, sopping wet, she headed back toward home, where she could hear the typical shouting. This time, however, Cole and Martha were shouting for Paige. A hint of worry echoed in the name. Paige ran to find her parents outside in their immediate backyard.
Though both parents gave a sigh of relief when Coleâs flashlight found her, Martha simply couldnât help herself. âPaige Ann Simms, where on Earth have you been?â
âAnd why in the hell are you soaked? We have been looking for you for half an hour, young lady. You seem to have forgotten that we explicitly told you to clean up the mess of glass you made and you were to stay in your room for the rest of the evening. Honestly, it isnât that hard of a task.â Cole shook his head but didnât linger. He turned, removing the light from Paigeâs face, and began the walk inside.
True to form, Martha followed suit, with both the disapproving head shake and the abandonment.
The anger that boiled within her earlier that day boiled over. Paige could feel every inch of her skin burning with rage. This time, as she clenched her fists, the hairs on her arms and back of her neck stood straight up.
A rumbling of the Earth forced her parents to stop and spin around, both of their flashlights aimed at their daughter. Thatâs when they saw it.
Paigeâs eyes were a deep, but bold, emerald green, flakes of purple reflected back into Coleâs and Marthaâs faces. Their daughter was hovering mere inches off the grass with a wall of the roaring sea water at her back. Waves crashed forward with the natural ebb and flow of the tide.
âPaige?â Martha shouted.
Paigeâs head turned in her direction. She blinked a few times, almost as if they were processing what was happening. She looked down, and her body listened, floating gently back down to the grassy yard. While unclenching her fists, the water wall, which had splashed everything within a ten-foot radius, came down and her eyes dulled back to their natural hazel color.
After looking at both of her parents with little concern, she walked between them and back through the slider. Paige casually went to the pantry, grabbed the dustpan and hand broom, and cleaned up her mess.
